The Challenge

Hello,

We're cycling South Amercia for fun and to raise money for the Royal Marsden cancer charity.  Dave and I will start in El Chalten in Southern Argentina and cycle to Cartagena in Columbia.  Commitments at home and saving money have kept us behind in England, forcing us to take a couple of shortcuts on our way but make no mistake, we still plan to cover in excess of 10000km passing through Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and Columbia.

With limited Spanish, camping and cycle touring experience we are hoping to have an adventure without too many disasters. Our goal is to replace saving lives with covering kilometres.

Beyond the distance, there are a number of difficulties:

1. The weather - contending with strong winds in southern Chile; temperatures dropping well below freezing on the Bolivian altiplano; and the battle of the sun vs our skin in the tropical climates of Equador and Columbia.
2. Thieves - we hope to ride away from danger and fall into the hospitality of the local people with smiles and sign language.
3. Orienteering - with a GPS device already lost and a relatively poor sense of direction, plans to follow the Southern cross are becoming increasing popular.

Beyond the jokes there is a hope that we can raise some money and awareness for charity along the way.

Cheers,

Kyle and Dave
